Which size of my dreadlock tams do you need?

I really make all these hats one at a time, and I care about your satisfaction. The following information comes from years of experience fitting rasta tams.

I have friends and local customers pose for pictures, they have helped me create my sizing structure through the years. My models give me very specific feedback when they are gifted with a hat to test. Many of them camp, swim, shower, sleep, or generally wear then 24/7 before something is given the 'green light' to join my product line. They've helped me keep the quality very high, and are as responsible as I am for the compliments, I can't thank them enough. Some of the models started out as babies and are now in school.

XS: up to 12" locks

Small: 10-15"

Medium: 16-30"

Large: 36" and up

Keep in mind:

  • Most of my hats are one size fits most, but the Tams, DreadHats, and Applejacks, have 4 sizes to choose from. Email me anytime about children's or custom sizes.
  • Sizes are based on dreadlock length and thickness, not head size. This is not a traditional sizing structure (like with Haberdashers or Milliners hats).
  • The Tams have a one size fits all opening with a toggle, it does not matter if your head is large or small, it will fit you, last until you grow out of it and be comfortable.
  • Ask yourself, "Will I wear my tam loose, or snug?" This will help determine what size you'll be comfortable in.
  • Many people will fit in more than one size, I ususally lean smaller with open stitches, but if you have FAT Dreads, go up.
  • A picture can help me tell what size you are, it is more helpful than a traditional hat size.
  • I have a huge Picture Gallery showing examples, separated into pages for each option. (yarn types, hat styles, stitches, and stripes).
  • If you want to get a gift, but don't know what size - my customers invented the HeadSock - no hair pulling! I am always concerned about weight on one's neck and possible hair loss from long, heavy hair, this is a great solution.

Few people have locks like Marley. Let me break it down for ya, my tams are roomier than store bought ones. I designed mine to be different, and better, than store bought ones. They are made in the US by me, and I don't use a sweatshop, it's just me, and sometimes a helper or two, or three. (I NEED CROCHET HELPERS)

Tips for your new handmade Tam:

  • Slight variations due to the handmade nature are to be embraced. All the yarns stretch to varying degrees, some start out more snug than others, and some stretch more and bounce back less. For instance, If the yarn is the type that stretches OUT well, but does not bounce back as much, then I make it so that it will fit the same size range, even if it looks more snug when it is new.
  • My tams are made for STUFFING. They are designed to sit high on the back of the head..
  • I have many customers that wear their tams until they grow out of them. The tam is almost always still in good condition. I hope you will wash it (lukewarm or cold water, gentle soap like Dr. Bronners) and give it to someone else. Then, I'd be happy to see you back to get a new one from me with your discount. *wink*.
  • Look at your packing slip when you get your new hat. There is a DISCOUNT CODE for your next order.

If you are not sure, even after reading all of this, what size you need, email me a picture. I'll help you out. I don't want you to waste your money, and making large tams does cost more and take time, so just email me if you're not sure. I do not normally accept returns on CUSTOM orders.

Many of my friends are artists, musicians, and other businesses that I'd love you to check out. Please visit the LINKS page and see their proud accomplishments. I LOVE MY 'PRODUCT TESTER' MODELS!

Below are more pictures to show what the hats look like on different people. Go to the picture gallery once you understand, and you will see hundreds of examples of sizes, stitches, stripes, and more.

EXTRA SMALL

Many people do NOT have dreadlocks, or are just starting them. XS will fit you for so long, that you might jump to Medium next. Extra-Small size Tams and DHats are best for long or curly hair, or dreads up to 12". Applejacks are SUPER cute in an XS. Also see NEWSBOY CAPS: baseball cap style fitted crochet hat.
...here is what these hats look like on people (notice none have dreads).

SMALL

Nikki has dreads about 12-18" long and they go from 1/2" to 1" thick. Ari has really curly, thick, long hair. She can wear an XS, but a Small will not crush her curls. Choose sizes based on how snug you'd like to hold your hair.
...notice everyone wears theirs differently, many choose a small for a 'floppy' boho style hat.

MEDIUM

Medium is another popular size. I don't get a change to see a lot of pictures, so if you have one of my hats and would like to be featured as a model, I'm especially exited about Medium hat pictures. Colin is 'My Medium Guy' and my #1 model. His dreads range from 18-30" inches and are about 1-2" thick. His length is common.
...as you can see, Nikki also can wear a Medium, but it is roomy, not snug.

LARGE

Few people need a LG, really, honest. Fex is a 'Large and even his locks will not fully stuff his hat. I do not recommend them unless you really think you can fit into it. These tams are for fat locks - you still might fit in a medium. Please be kind to your dreads! If you always wear a tight tam or Applejack, you will have hair breakage, so take turns and wear a HeadSock occasionally!
